The iconic Chevrolet Camaro is bringing back pride with the "Heartbeat of America", but it likely won't be built in the United States. It's been reported by several sources (The Car Connection, Automotive News, NY Times) that when GM puts the Camaro into production in 2008, it won't come to America as a native-born citizen, rather as a Canadian from Ontario. The new Camaro is rumored to require at least $658 million in capital expenditures to gear up the plant for production upgrades. Eventually, the Ontario plant will be equipped as a flex facility, being able to produce other rear-wheel drive platform cars as well. Perhaps the Pontiac Firebird might join the party, as it was produced in Montreal with its sibling (Camaro) before they were both dropped back in 2002. It does not make much sense to spend several hundred million dollars only to resurrect and create one sports car model.
