What? Yeah, that's what we said. We had a good idea that the forthcoming Chevrolet Camaro had a good chance of being harnessed to a V6, but a turbo 4-banger? That's a novel idea for such a car. It's been almost 20 years since we've seen a 4-cylinder engine (production) come in a pony car. Now, for Lutz to drop this bombshell, the boost fans and eco-minded might just have reason to take another look at this latest-generation Camaro.
Rising costs of fuel, a recessed economy, and internal flux
surrounding the final powertrain for the car have all influenced the
sudden change of heart for the Camaro. The 2.0 liter turbocharged
engine under scope is the same direct-injected heart of the Pontiac
Solstice & Saturn Sky. Lutz, you might want to up the boost a tad
before installation...last we checked, those two cars look like
paperweights when compared to the size of the new Camaro.
The other [eco] alternative to the LSx powerplant everyone drools
over is the 3.6L DOHC V6, a la Cadillac CTS, that is rated at 304
horsepower. The hopes these multiple choices to burn fossil fuels are
to bring aim at offering a value-based alternative to the top-end
models; AKA, something to compete with the entry level Ford Mustang and
the recently announced SE version of the Dodge Challenger.
"We are going to be above Mustang," Lutz said. " We have a very
sophisticated suspension system and, frankly, a much nicer interior. We
are not going to try and match the Mustang on price. We are going to be premium-priced compared to the Mustang."
We'll see, Bob.....we'll just have to see. |
